Sustainable Living and Community Cooperation in Qixi Village

KWOK LAI CHU, Nancy

Visiting 中山旗溪村 was a truly transformative experience for me. From the moment we arrived, I felt a deep connection to the culture and the community. Participating in wood workshops, where we crafted our own chopsticks, and handmade soap workshops highlighted the importance of traditional craftsmanship. Watching the artisans at work was inspiring; their passion for preserving age-old techniques reminded me of the significance of cultural heritage in our rapidly changing world, especially in urban areas.

We also visited a local sustainable farm, where we learned about various herbs and their benefits. For example, basil has anti-inflammatory properties that aid digestion and reduce stress, while rosemary can improve memory and concentration and provides antioxidants. I was amazed to discover organic farming methods that prioritize environmental health, particularly how the farm processes waste. This experience deepened my appreciation for biodiversity and heightened my awareness of sustainable agriculture. The farm organizers' commitment to sustainability was contagious and prompted me to reflect on how we can develop sustainable lifestyles as consumers. They emphasized the importance of conservation efforts, which resonated with me and highlighted our collective responsibility to protect the environment and the natural resources we often take for granted.

Furthermore, the residents work together to protect their trees, fostering a strong sense of community. Hearing their stories made me realize how vital community involvement is in sustainability initiatives. It underscored the fact that real change happens when we collaborate, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. One of my favorite moments was the cooking class, where we prepared pizzas using fresh, local ingredients. It was not just about food; it was about connecting with the community.

I was impressed to hear from local experts about the challenges and successes they encounter while conducting community projects, such as rising rent pressures and conflicts between residents and newcomers. However, they continue to strive for consensus because they share the same mission: to build a harmonious community. Sustainability practices largely depend on the collective voice of the community, indicating that there is still much work to be done.

On a personal level, this trip has sparked a renewed commitment to sustainability in my daily life. I believe that small steps can make a big difference, so I have started practicing environmentally friendly actions, such as reducing plastic use and composting. Additionally, I share knowledge about sustainability with my friends and family to inspire collective action on social media platforms. The mass media serve as an influential platform to enhance people's awareness of sustainability.

Overall, it was a meaningful and engaging trip that provided an in-depth look at sustainability issues. This experience inspired me to think about how we can practice sustainable living in Hong Kong, particularly focusing on waste management and community cooperation. I gained a better understanding of organic practices and insights that enriched my perspective on the world, motivating me to take action. I am grateful for the connections I made and the knowledge I gained, and I look forward to sharing these experiences with others to encourage more people to embrace sustainability in their lives.
